Terms and definitions (S)

User biometric characteristic obtained at the output under
data collection systems.

Sample BIR
A biometric information record whose biometric data block contains only biometric samples that are not templates.

Sampling rate
The number of counts per second of time (or other unit of measurement) when sampling a time-continuous signal.

Scenario evaluation
A test in which the performance of a system is determined using a prototype or simulation application.

A value that determines the degree to which the biometric sample matches the control biometric template.

Security block
A data block containing information on the integrity of the biometric data record.

Self-contained device
A combination device that includes a biometric scanner and all or part of the functions of a biometric service provider.

Hand contour data obtained during registration from the side of the thumb or from the side of the little finger.

Signature/digital signature
Special data added to a data block, or cryptographic transformation of a data block, allowing the recipient of the data block to guarantee the authenticity of the author and the integrity of the data block and to protect the data from tampering.

Side-view reference plane
The physical or imaginary plane onto which the side view of the hand outline is projected.

Signature/sign representation
Data recorded for one signature.

Similarity score
Comparison result that increases with similarity.

Short tandem repeat, STR
Short DNA sequences that are repeated many times during direct inheritance.

Standard interchange format
A format specified in ISO/IEC 19794 or any other publicly available biometric data format specification.

Standardised biometric data block
A block of data in a standardized format containing one or more biometric samples or biometric templates.

Streaming data
Data passing through an interface from a source that is continuously running.

Subject base
A group of people whose biometric data is supposed to be used for biometric registration or comparison in the course of using a working biometric system.

Sweat pore
Tiny holes in the skin that are fluids that are part of the body’s temperature regulation system.

Subversive biometric capture subject
A biometric data collection entity that attempts to disrupt the proper and intended system policy of the biometric data collection subsystem.

A measure of the conformity of the performance of a homogeneous biometric system using a standardized data exchange format to the specified requirements.

Researcher, commercial enterprise, organization or institution providing a device for obtaining biometric data, a subsystem for generating or comparing an OBD.

System acceptance rate
Percentage of operational biometric system recognition transactions in which the subject was recognised.

System identification rate
Percentage of operational biometric system identification transactions in which one or more subjects are identified.

System rejection rate
Percentage of operational biometric system recognition transactions in which the subject was not recognised.
